The conditional
1 Formation
1.1 Regular verbs
For all verbs the conditional is formed by taking the future
stem
and adding the following
endings -ais, ais, -ait,
-ions, -iez, -aient.

We’d extend the house but we don’t have the money.
Elle a dit qu'elle n' oublierait pas de lui en parler.
She said she wouldn’t forget to talk to him about it.
A votre place je ne me fierais pas à ce qu’il dit.
If I were you I wouldn’t trust what he says.
Les photos ne jauniraient pas si tu les laissais dans leur album.
The photos wouldn’t go yellow if you left them in their album.
Je t’avais bien dit que tu vendrais ta voiture facilement.
I told you you’d sell your car easily.
1.2 Semi-irregular verbs
Formation is the same for semi-irregular verbs:

Nous rachèterions bien la maison d’en face mais elle est trop chère.
We would buy the house across the road but it’s too expensive.
Est-ce que vous changeriez d’emploi si vous le pouviez?
Would you change job if you could?
Si tu prenais le train je t’ emmènerais à la gare.
If you were going by train I’d take you to the station.
S’il ne lui téléphonait pas en rentrant chez lui elle s’inquiéterait.
If he didn’t phone her when he got home she’d get worried.
Il voulait lui offrir un cadeau dont elle se rappellerait toujours.
He wanted to give her a present she’d remember for ever.
1.3 Irregular verbs
Irregular verbs are formed in the same manner as regular and semi-irregular verbs:

Ils ont dit qu'ils partiraient de bonne heure.
They said they would leave early.
Est-ce que ça t’ ennuierait d’aller chez le boulanger avant de rentrer?
Would you mind going to the baker’s before you get back?
S’ils y consacraient plus de temps ils découvriraient certainement le coupable.
If they devoted more time to it they’d definitely catch the culprit.
J’apprécierais que tu me préviennes quand les travaux commenceront.
I’d appreciate it if you told me when the work is starting.
Je suivrais volontiers ses conseils mais je souhaiterais avoir quelques précisions.
I’d happily follow his advice but I’d like to have a few clarifications.
2 Use of the conditional
The conditional is used in the following contexts:
2.1 Expressing wish, need
When expressing a wish or need:
Ce serait bien agréable d'aller
à la plage aujourd'hui
It would be really nice to go to the beach today
2.2 Sentences containing si
In a sentence containing si:
Je viendrais avec vous si je
n'étais pas si fatigué
I would come with you if I wasn't so tired
2.3 Polite requests
For making polite requests or suggestions:
Pourriez-vous m'aider, je cherche
l'Hotel de Ville?
Could you help me, I'm looking for the Town Hall
2.4 After au cas où
Je prendrai un pullover au cas où le temps se refroidirait
I'll take a jumper in case it gets colder
2.5 In the conditional perfect
Si tu me l'avais dit plus tôt, je serais venu t'aider
If you had told me sooner, I would have come and helped you
D’après le journal télévisé on aurait retrouvé les tableaux.
According to the television news the paintings have been found.
Si tu m’avais prévenu j’ aurais préparé ta chambre.
If you’d warned me I’d have got your room ready.
Si le boucher en avait eu je vous aurais fait du canard.
If the butcher had had some in I’d have cooked you duck.
Nous aurions voulu voir ce film dès sa sortie.
We would have liked to have seen this film when it came out.
Si vous l’aviez prévenu de votre absence il aurait pu trouver un remplaçant.
If you’d told him you weren’t going to be there he could have found a replacement.
